What to Expect

Starting from Lisbon, start this trip in Coimbra, a region of many charms and the cradle of the most beloved traditions of Portugal. This is where curious travellers have a unique opportunity in this region to be part of history through secular rituals, breathtaking monuments, enchanted woods, picturesque villages and magical places.

Head towards Luso and Mata do Buçaco, considered an oasis in the centre of Portugal, a forest that is half forest and half bush and which transports all visitors to a dream area. One of the great responsibility for this unique place was the Order of the Barefoot Carmelites who chose, in the sixteenth century, this region to settle, contributing to the planting and extension of the forest.

Get to know Curia’s thermal baths, which are the oldest thermal spas in the country, known since the time of Roman occupation. The thermal baths had their golden period between the decades of 1920 and 1950 when they were looked for by thermalises from all over the country and abroad.

Before returning to Lisbon, visit Figueira da Foz (where the river Mondego and the ocean meet) considered by many the “queen of the Silver Coast”.

In the expected course, after leaving Lisbon, will be made the first stop in Coimbra, the main city of the Center of Portugal. Coimbra has a long and rich history, well known in the various buildings and high cultural importance, being considered one of the most important cities in Portugal.

The visit to this city allows one to know one of the most historical places in the country, owner of a large and important heritage and bathed by the remarkable river Mondego. In the “enchanting and fantastic Coimbra”, always young, but whose importance dates back to the medieval period, you can visit the most beautiful places, the most remarkable viewpoints, and historical points and enjoy its fascinating history and traditions and discover the charm of its streets, courtyards and medieval arches so picturesque and romantic.

Counting on a unique material and immaterial heritage, fundamental in the history of European and world scientific culture, it is from the 2013 UNESCO World Heritage.

Coimbra, which saw the birth of 6 Kings of Portugal, has the first University of the country and one of the oldest in Europe. Being often nicknamed “City of Knowledge” or “City of Students”, the tour begins with a visit to the University, one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in Europe, created in the 12th century.

With over 700 years of history, it has always been and continues to be a key element of the social and cultural life of the city and one of the great cultural milestones of its development.

The academic tradition of Coimbra, with the animation of the famous republics, also present in the bars and festivals of the old city, as well as the typical Fado prevail until nowadays with the same cultural force of old. Due to the University, Coimbra is, above all, a land of conviviality and student bohemia and a land of contrasts, between the sea and the mountains, bathed by the river Mondego, the largest river that is born in Portugal, being also known to have a landscape filled with pleasant beaches and hot springs.

In the space of the University of Coimbra, it is worth mentioning its Museum of Sacred Art, the Chapel of São Miguel and the Joanina Library, whose visit is obligatory. Its construction took place in the 18th century, being recognized as one of the most original and spectacular European baroque libraries. This magnificent construction took place in the reign of D. João V, predominating in it the gilded carving and exotic woods.

From the wealth of materials to the artistic refinement of baroque decoration, the Joanina Library, which has about 300,000 volumes, has some of the rarest and most important books in Portugal, constituting an indisputable and true artistic temple devoted to human knowledge.

It was also in Coimbra that the forbidden love of D. Pedro I and D. Inês took place, which inspired poets and writers, continuing their history to be part of the city’s heritage.

The various monuments of Coimbra attest to its historical past, of which the Arco and Porta de Almedina, the Arcos do Jardim, the Santa Clara-a-Nova Convent, the Convent of Santa Maria de Celas, the Convent of S Francisco, the Monastery of Celas, the Monastery of Lorvão, the Monastery of Santa Clara-a-Velha, the Churches of Santa Cruz, Santa Justa, Santo António dos Olivais, S. Bartolomeu, S. Salvador and S. Tiago, Sé Nova and Sé Velha, Quinta das Lágrimas and S. Sebastião Aqueduct.

After the city tour, we suggest a cruise on the Mondego River, which will take approximately 60 minutes, where you can see some of the main places of the heart of the city, including the Santa Clara bridge, the Ponte da Açude, Concerto, and Lapa dos Esteios, a garden located by the river, as well as the modern Queen Elizabeth Bridge, Quinta das Varandas and Bentos Island.

As a culmination of this unforgettable visit, nothing like a special lunch. Since Coimbra is a region famous for roasted suckling pigs and also for its wines, there is nothing better than going through Mealhada and savouring the roasted piglet at Bairrada, one of the best known and most appreciated regional dishes of this oldest and most important region of sparkling wine in the country. Being very much appreciated, this dish was named one of the 7 Wonders of Gastronomy of Portugal.

Continuing the tour, we will continue our journey through the 100-year-old Buçaco National Forest, one of the richest national forests in natural, architectural and cultural heritage, possessing numerous rare and secular plant species, being considered the most valuable part of the natural heritage Portuguese.

With landscapes of indescribable beauty, the Buçaco Mountain is a magical place, which in the 16th century was protected by papal decree and transformed into a monastic retreat from the rest of the world.

In it you can visit the Palace Hotel do Buçaco, neomanuelina building designed by the scenographer Luigi Manini, a royal residence built at the end of the 19th century, considered the most important Portuguese revival building. The Royal Palace, considered the last legacy of the Kings of Portugal and an inescapable symbol of Portuguese Romanticism, boasts valuable panels of tiles and encloses murals of great quality. The famous Buçaco Palace rises majestically in the heart of the Buçaco Forest, transporting us to a world of fairy tales filled with sumptuous fantasy.

Within this totally walled forest, several Chapels of the Sacred Way, the former Convent of the Barefoot Carmelites, are built. Continuing up the hill, we reach Cruz Alta, a viewpoint of beautiful and vast panoramas that, on days of good visibility, extend to the silver line of the Atlantic beaches.

Allowing the recovery of the perfect balance between Body, Mind, and Soul, Buçaco is another enchanted place in this environment conducive to romance and contact with nature.

The village of Luso is one of the most well-known places in the municipality of Mealhada. Tourist village, wooded in the southern part of Baixo Vouga, district of Aveiro. It includes in its territory great part of the mountain of Buçaco, well-known for its exuberant landscape.

At the foot of the Buçaco mountain, we find Vila do Luso, a thermal resort that takes advantage of the excellent water from the Buçaco sheet and where the famous fountain of São João is located, where you can taste the acclaimed water of Luso, famous for excellence in the quality of its waters.

The panoramic visit to Luso includes a visit to the historical and intimate Hotel Alegre.

A little further north, the Curia is reached. This is a Portuguese village, where you can find the famous thermal baths of the same name with a lush park that invites to rest. A place of great demand in the first half of the 20th century, the Belle Époque and Arte Nova architecture being very present.

The place was already known by the Romans, who knew the springs and explored them, and they gave the name to him of Aqua Curiva (water that cures), that gave rise to its current name.

AfternoonFigueira da Foz
